If you are new to DNA testing and keen to get started quickly, you should know that there are five DNA matching databases for genealogy and different people test at different companies… but you can’t go wrong by selecting the most popular and highly-recommended AncestryDNA test. If you have more time available, you may like to learn about the different types of DNA tests and compare the features of each of the autosomal DNA tests. If you have already done a genealogy DNA test, or you start with AncestryDNA now, you can upload your DNA data to several other DNA databases to get more matches.

Note that 23andMe provides their ancestry service to Australian customers, however their health products are not available to Australian & New Zealand customers.
23andMe customers can create a hardcover book called The Story of Your DNA, which includes your Ancestry Composition, your Neanderthal ancestry, the traits you share with your DNA Relatives, and details of what your DNA says about your roots across the globe. 23andMe customers can order this keepsake for themselves, and in the near future they will be able to order a gift for a friend or family member with whom they are sharing their DNA results.
Note that you cannot upgrade a free atDNA data upload to Y-DNA or mtDNA, as FTDNA does not have your DNA sample to test.

Whole Genome Sequencing tests your whole genome – 6.4 billion base pairs, not just the (approx) 700,000 markers that we use for genealogy.
